Le Mat.

A nickname before it became a character.

His friends called him Matt. In French, Le Mat names the Fool of the Tarot de Marseille: the figure that walks without a fixed place in the sequence. Matteo became Matt; Matt became LeMatt. Not through doctrine, but through use.

Then Indonesia added another resonance. Selamat lives inside daily greetings: morning, night, arrival, departure, welcome. The resemblance is not an etymology. It is an encounter heard by someone whose work has always begun with images, names and accidents of attention.

What is known, remembered and still open.

The origin of emBaliment is kept as a layered record. A documented trace is not the same thing as an author’s memory; an etymology proposed by the project is not a historical derivation. Keeping those levels visible is part of the work.

1. Before the wordDocumented practice

   Attention was already a method.

   Across more than twenty years of artistic work, Matteo repeatedly turned anomaly, error, encounter and contradiction into protocols, public tests and archives. This genealogy explains how the word was recognised; it does not prove when the word first appeared.

2. Origin sceneAuthor’s memory

   A sound produced through play was kept.

   LeMatt remembers the word arriving as a phonetic accident in conversation and movement, before it was cultivated as a concept. The precise first conversation, date, place and spelling remain to be consolidated through a note, file, message or witness.

3. Ubud · 2026Internal record

   The project gives the word a written form.

   The current authorial archive records emBaliment in Ubud in 2026 and attributes it to LeMatt / Matteo Fieni. Until the earliest surviving trace is identified, “first recorded in Ubud, 2026” remains an internal attribution rather than an independently certified linguistic fact.

4. 2026 · ongoingPublic verification

   The word is tested by what it can sustain.

   The Lexicon tests its grammar. The Embalimeter turns it into a reflective situation. Niskala preserves questions and revisions. Future uses, criticism and credited local review will become part of the record rather than evidence added retrospectively.

LeMatt is the authorial voice of Matteo Fieni.

Matteo Fieni is a Swiss visual artist and project author working across photography, research and cultural production. LeMatt is not a separate identity, but the intimate and linguistic voice through which this chapter is spoken.

He lives and works between Bali and Lugano. emBaliment emerged in Ubud as an authored word for a slow transformation: what happens when a place is no longer only where you are, but enters the way you see.

LeMatt is not presented as an Indonesian voice or spiritual authority. He is the European author of an encounter, responsible for making the position, limits and relationships of that encounter visible.

Intuition, trained through practice.

emBaliment began through play, but it was recognised through a method exercised for more than twenty years. Matteo’s work repeatedly starts by noticing a deviation — an encounter, error, contradiction or form that asks not to be discarded.

The intuition is not treated as proof. It becomes a rule, image, word or situation; it enters public life; its consequences return to the archive. emBaliment continues that movement through language.

   Stay with terrain, material and encounter long enough for a difference to appear.

2. 02 Anomaly

   Distinguish a meaningful deviation from noise, novelty or projection.

3. 03 Protocol

   Give the perception a repeatable condition that can be observed and questioned.

4. 04 Public test

   Let the device meet people, places and consequences beyond the author.

5. 05 Archive

   Preserve the response so that the intuition can later be revised, contradicted or migrated.

One practice. Several autonomous worlds.

emBaliment belongs to a wider field of artworks, archives and public platforms authored or produced through different structures. Their relationships are visible, but their roles are not collapsed.
